I had some vague ideas of how I wanted to approach developing a portfolio.
I knew I wanted to relearn tableau. I knew I wanted to experiment with aesthetic seduction (a term I heard Andy Kirk use when I attended his excellent one-day workshop). And I knew I needed structure.
And that was it…it was time to ask the experts.
So I asked Andy Kirk and Andy Cotgreave. You can hear their full response at around 37 minutes on this webinar recording. Andy C’s suggestion was to participate in Makeover Monday and Andy K’s was threefold: to be disciplined, to think like a Data Journalist, and to add constraints.
I had a plan: to start each Friday with Makeover Monday, rebuilding my knowledge of tableau. To learn how to think like a Data Journalist, by enrolling on the Data Exploration and Storytelling MOOC from Alberto Cairo and Heather Krause. By the start of March, the online course would be over, I would be knocking off Makeover Monday before breakfast, and my new part-time guise as a pretend Data Journalist would begin!
